Daniel Dewhurst is founder of The Cherry Laundry clothing company which is based on 1950’s laundry nostalgia yet with a Scottish twist!
Dan’s t-shirt designs are based on the different styles of launderettes and the associations that come along with that i.e iron, washing machines etc.
“I’ve always had an interest in different styles of launderettes and I like the idea of people meeting and chatting whilst they wait for their clothes to be washed (I guess its a bit like the ‘Coffee Culture’ but in a launderette and without the coffee!)”
Dan studied illustration at university and says “I designed and stenciled my own t shirts and this is really where my idea to create a clothing brand started although it took me a few years after this to do anything about it.”
“The idea to actually use a laundrette as my brands theme came about when I was sketching a laundry I used whilst I was travelling. It just kind of popped into my head that it would make a good clothing brand and after playing around with some words I ended up with The Cherry Laundry. It was all very random how it came about but I very much embrace randomness.”
The brand has a very vintage feel about it with the faded print and style of font used, creating that classic 1950’s look.
Dan talks about his relationship with a graphics/branding company … “I’ve been able to realise my brands direction. I’m now concentrating just on creating ‘launderette based tshirt designs’…….I’ve found there’s a lot you can do with irons, washing machines etc.”
“My uniform is one of my t shirts and my kilt! I’m very fond of the area I grew up in as a child back home in Scotland (Perthshire) and I want this to come across in my brand and what better way to get peoples attention when working on a stall. I’ve found people really get involved and are always keen to find out why I’m wearing a kilt and it then gives me the chance to talk about The Cherry Laundry.”
