Our studio is filled with graphic designers, so of course, we enjoy being picky about digital design and branding. Here’s 5 lovely brand identities that came out of 2018.

Whether you are a small boutique brand or a large, corporate business; you’ll know how important it is to have a strong logo and brand identity. Almost everything we print here at Icon Printing, relates to a brand or logo in some form or another. Maybe you’re thinking about a re-brand, or you could be a start up without the spare cash to splash out on a bespoke logo – this is a post for you. We’ve come up with a few pointers to follow when creating logos and specific design considerations to look at to insure your logo design reproduces well in all mediums; screen, print and signage.

Before you get stuck into the look or even the “naming” of your logo or business, there’s a few things to bare in mind. What does your company do? Are you local, national or global? Think about your target audience, who are they and what do they do? Are they high, mid or low earners? Who are your competitors and what are they doing? Next, think about where your logo will be displayed – it could be applied to business cards, but also vehicle livery, apparel, a website, etc.

1. Research.

Do your homework! Do as much research as you can in the time available.Research the competition and similar companies. Look at their logos and websites. What kind of image do they project?

Look at details such as colour schemes, typefaces, images, symbols, etc.
Look at unrelated businesses that target a similar audience as yours. What is their visual attraction?

With the London 2012 Olympics now less than a month away, we thought we’d have a look around their online shop to check out what’s on offer in the way of promotional clothing. Due to the committees strict branding guidelines – you may be better off buying from their online selection rather than printing your own (due to copyright restrictions. For more info on that, check out this link).

There is a wide variety of styles, ranges and graphics; they’ve definitely catered for every taste. Whether it’s Team GB, Adidas or London 2012 Union Jack branding you’re after, their range of Olympic t-shirts and tops will impress.

One of our favourite items available, is a tote bag that is sporting an image of the iconic poster from the last time London held the Olympic games in 1948. Pretty eye-catching!

We’ve been meaning to do a blog post on this brand for a little while now. Not only because they’re a fan of Gotham typeface as much as we are (our new logo is Gotham…keep your eyes peeled, it’s coming soon – along with our new website!), but we’ve recently noticed just how successful they’ve become in their unique market. They’ve perfected the blend of chilled, surf lifestyle combined with the sophistication of a big city. We can’t fault their brand identity, we’d happily sport a plain white tee with their black Saturdays logo across it. It’s wonderfully simple but equally as eye catching.

You’ll be surprised to know that they actually are a surf shop in NYC, it’s not just a fancy name. You may have also seen their logo sitting upon paper coffee cups – don’t worry that’s not some kind of mistake either, just another string to their bow.

In late ’09, downtown Manhattan became the site for Saturdays Surf. The store, which caters to New York’s surfers and coffee drinkers alike, is a small boutique focused on clean, stylish apparel, classic hardgoods, and a sampling of finer accessories and footwear. In little over a year the store has become an icon of sorts, and its private label is becoming a brand in its own right.

Out the back our their store is a fully planted yard that acts as a wood-decked sanctuary from the streets. It is a place to enjoy their coffee, hang out with friends or have a quiet meeting. Sounds ideal!

When in comes to producing artwork or logos for printing onto garments, we often find that keeping things simple is often best. We’re here to help at Icon Printing, and don’t mind tweaking your artwork in order to achieve the best printed outcome for you. Here is something to help you along the way, in the form of a super handy free vector download site. We know these sites are nothing new, but we think The Noun Project is one of the best we’ve come across.

The Noun Project collects, organizes and adds to the highly recognizable symbols that form the world’s visual language, in order to share them in a fun and meaningful way. Their moto being “Sharing, celebrating and enhancing the world’s visual language”. There are so many symbols to choose from and when you’ve found what you’re looking for, it’s an easy click to download, with it appearing on your desktop as a handy Illustrator vector in moments. Brilliant!
